After leaving Florence, we made our way to Rome make a quick stop in Orvieto to see the church the small town is famous for. The exterior was covered in stripes except for the front which was more intricately decorated. It was definitely unique, and worth seeing.
When we got to Rome, we immediately began the most fast-paced city tour thus far. The first evening there we saw the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain (we threw coins in for good luck of course) and the Spanish Steps before eating at Pizzeria da Baffetto, where you can get the absolute best pizza in all of Italy.
The next morning we headed straight to the Vatican. After an impressive tour through St. Peters Church we went to the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel and, before we knew it, 6 hours flew by. We followed that with the Coliseum, the forum, Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele, and Piazza Novano. To unwind from our crazy day we grabbed drinks at Botticella, a bar near our hotel that was made for college kids. It is covered in banners from different US universities, including one from A&M!
We woke up the next morning and made our way to the Amalfi Coast... my new favorite place in the world. Our hotel was in Sorrento, complete with a terrific view of the city and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is a perfect place to just relax, enjoy the view, and watch boats and cruise ships sail by. We spent one day traveling to some nearby cities, driving through Amalfi and stopping in Ravello and Positano. After a wonderful day of relaxing on the beach we had dinner at Tavern Allegra, which I would recommend to any future visitors to Sorrento. Of course we had our fair share of Lemon Cello shots and Dean Martin cover bands...needless to say, I will be returning to the Amalfi Coast again in the future.
Our last day in Italy, we returned to Rome where we came across the middle of a gay pride parade... definitely a sight to see. About one hundred drag queens later (including a couple dressed as William and Kate), we had our last Italian dinner. Although I never thought it was possible, I'm a little tired of pasta, and ready for something different. Bright and early this morning, we boarded the train to Interlaken to meet our Longhorn friends and begin the second part of the trip!
